Cleveland Cavaliers Struggling To Keep Team Together As Kyrie Irving Opts Out
The Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors (GSW) are without doubt the two best teams in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The two teams have made it to three consecutive NBA Finals with the Cavaliers winning the 2016 Championship and the GSW winning 2015 and 2017.
GSW will enter the 2017-2018 season as the defending champions and the favorites as they have succeeded in keeping their core team together during the off-season. The Cleveland Cavaliers on the other hand have struggled to do the same and have lost key individuals which could hurt their chances of winning another NBA Championship in 2018.
Cavaliers Lose GM Griffin
The Cleveland Cavaliers lost their general manager David Griffin in June after the Cavaliers were unable to reach an agreement on his contract extension. They tried to get Chauncey Billups as a replacement but failed and are still without a general manager. Many expect assistant general manager Koby Altman to step in as a temporary replacement.
Earlier this week, ESPN announced that star player Kyrie Irving does not want to remain with the Cavaliers and has asked the team to trade him. Irving along with LeBron James have been the two key players for the Cavaliers and there are some reports that the two stars were having issues which led to Irving wanting to move on. James was quick to take to Twitter and deny those rumors. There have also been reports that Lebron James wasn’t happy with the direction that the Cavaliers were taking and was also thinking about a move. James hasn’t confirmed any of those rumors nor denied them.
Cavaliers About To Lose Kyrie Irving
Irving has also not confirmed reports that he has asked the Cavaliers to trade him but his agent Jeff Wechsler has opened up to ESPN about talks with the Cavaliers. In a statement, Wechsler said “Kyrie and I had a meeting with Cavs leadership where we discussed many different scenarios in reference to Kyrie and his future with the team. The basis of those discussions and what went on in those discussions are between the Cavs and us. We are respectfully going to keep those private.”
The Cavaliers were apparently unhappy over the fact that discussions between them and Irving were leaked to the public as they believe it could hurt his trade deal. There are reports that Irving could make a move to the Minnesota Timberwolves or the San Antonio Spurs.
