Anthony Joshua Remains Undefeated After Ref Makes Controversial Stoppage In Cardiff

Anthony Joshua is the hottest boxing prospect in the United Kingdom (UK) and fans thronged to Cardiff to see their IBF and WBA champion defend his belts against Cameroonian fighter Carlos Takam. There was close to 76,000 fans that packed the indoor Principality Stadium and waited patiently for the main event to take place and witnessed a good fight that resulted in a controversial stoppage.

Fight Took Place On 12 Days Notice

This fight wasn’t supposed to happen as Anthony Joshua was preparing to face Bulgarian boxer Kubrat Pulev who was also the number one contender. However Pulev withdrew with less than two weeks to the fight and Joshua’s camp succeeded in getting Carlos Takam to accept the fight. This was a dangerous decision for both camps as Joshua had prepared for Pulev and now had to change his strategy with just a few days’ notice while Takam was getting a title shot with very little preparation.

Takam Puts On A Great Show

Joshua came into the fight with an undefeated 19-0 record and was the favourite. Takam put on a great show and showed that Joshua does have quite a few weaknesses that could be exploited. The two boxers banged heads in the second round and Joshua ended up breaking his nose. To his credit, he succeeded in staying calm and took full advantage of the opening Takam gave him in the fourth round.

Joshua got the first knock down of the fight after he hit Takam with a right uppercut and then followed it up with a strong combination that floored Takam and caused significant damage to his eye. The crowd were thirsty for more blood but the veteran fighter showed that he could not only take damage but hold his own against Joshua. There were quite a few times in the fight where Joshua looked in trouble and showed signs of fatigue.

He turned up the aggression in the 10th round and connected a number of times but Takam still stayed on his feet. The referee Phil Edwards decided to jump in and stop the fight which surprised both Takam and the Cardiff crowd who immediately booed the decision. Takam was willing to continue the fight but the referee thought he had enough and wanted to stop any more damage.

Joshua Not Worried About The Decision

This is yet another decision in boxing that has not gone down well with the fans. However Joshua shrugged off the decision stated that he only concentrated on what went on in the ring and did not get involved in the judging. The 28 year old Brit who remains undefeated said that he respected his opponent for taking the fight on short notice and thought that he fought a good fight.

Takam has stated that wants a rematch with Joshua and would like to have a full training camp before facing the champ again. Boxing fans want to see Anthony Joshua fight either WBO star Joseph Parker or WBC champ Deontay Wilder in 2018.
