Anthony Joshua Will Fight New Opponent On October 28 After Kubrat Pulev Pulls Out Due To Injury
UK’s Anthony Joshua who is the unified heavyweight world champion was expected to fight Bulgarian Kubrat Pulev on October 28 in Cardiff, Wales. The organizers had already sold out over 75,000 tickets and received a surprise this week when Pulev’s camp announced that he would have to pull out due to a shoulder injury.
The Bulgarian who is the number one contender apparently injured his should a week ago but kept things quiet as he was hoping to recover in time for the fight. When it became clear that Pulev was not going to recover in time, his camp was forced to make the announcement on October 16.
Carlos Takam Happy To Take Fight
Eddie Hearn, who is the promoter with Matchroom Boxing had prepared well as he did not want the boxing bout to be cancelled and called on the number 2 contender, Carlos Takam to step in and fight Anthony Joshua on October 28. Takam is ranked in third place by the International Boxing Federation (IBF) while Pulev is ranked number two. The Cameroonian fighter has agreed to step in as a late replacement and the IBF has confirmed that it will treat this fight as a mandatory title defense from Joshua.
Hearn stated that when the fight between Joshua and Pulev was confirmed, he went ahead and contacted Takam’s team and asked them to prepare and be on standby in case Pulev had to pull out. So when Pulev’s team informed Hearn on Monday that he was being withdrawn from the fight, he quickly contacted Thakam’s who were thrilled to step in and take the fight. So while theoretically it is 12 days notice for Thakam, he has been preparing for quite awhile to fight Joshua
Joshua Must Prepare For New Fighting Style
When it comes to high profile boxing matches, rarely do champion fighters accept a change of opponent on 12 days notice. However Anthony Joshua made the decision to fight Carlos Takam and will now have to prepare with his team to fight a boxer who has a completely different style than Pulev. The 36 year oldTakam has won his last two fights and will be a heavy underdog with the bookies when he fights Anthony Joshua.
Anthony Joshua will go in as the favourite and will be expected to dominate Takam but there is always a risk when a fighter take on a new opponent at short notice. Boxers go through rigorous training camps for weeks working on a game plan and strategy for one particular fighting style and when a new opponent is presented at short notice, there is a rush to put a new plan in place.
There have been a number of top fighters who have been queuing up to fight Anthony Joshua. WBC titleholder Deontay Wilder has been pretty vocal in recent weeks of wanting to fight Joshua in a unification bout. Wilder was supposed to defend his title on Nov 4 against Luis Ortiz but also saw a change of opponent when Ortiz was pulled after testing positive for a banned substance. Wilder will now fight Bermane Stiverne who is the mandatory challenger.
