The long-anticipated bout between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin has landed and tension are very high on the eve of the fight. The fight will be held at the T-Mobile arena in Las Vegas, Nevada and will take place on the 16th September 2017. The middleweight match-up is being regarded as one of the best pairings since the 1980’s and even of all time.
Canelo, 27, has an impressive record of 51 fights in total, with 49 wins (34 KO’s), 1 draw and just one loss which he suffered to Floyd Mayweather in September 2013 when the Mexican born fighter was just 23 years old. Golovkin on the other hand is currently undefeated in professional boxing having fought 37 fights and not losing any of them, he also holds one of the greatest KO ratios in the business having knocked out 34 of his opponents.
Gennady Golovkin, or ‘GGG’ as he is better known, comes from Kazakhstan and has fought his way from Olympic to amateur and now to professional boxing, he had his first fight in the States in 2012 and hasn’t looked back since. In the process he has taken down numerous big names like; Willie Munroe Jr., Dominic Wade and Damien Lemieux, a feat that not too many fighters can emulate. During Canelo’s time in the USA he has went through plenty of huge fighters too like Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosley and his destruction of Amir Khan was talked about heavily also.
It is being hailed as the potential fight of the year, the stakes are extremely high with the WBA, WBC, IBF and The Ring Belts all being put on the line. The winner will surely go down in the history books as one the of greatest.
For bigtime boxing fans, it will be a breath of fresh air as they will get to see two hardcore, well technically gifted boxers go at it, something that they have been waiting quite a while for. It is a turn in the right direction from the latest spectacle put on between Floyd ‘Money’ Mayweather and ‘The Notorious’ Conor McGregor, as that fight was more so a money making venture whereas this fight is simply here to decide who is the better middleweight of our generation.
There are currently four fights on the main fight card including this main event. Joseph Diaz and Rafael Rivera are fighting it out in the featherweight division, in the Super Bantamweight fight Diego De La Hoya is taking on Randy Caballero and in the Lightweight bout the American Ryan Martin is taking on Francisco Rojo.
