Manchester United are no longer the dominant force in football as they once used to be during Sir Alex Ferguson’s reign as manager. Man United have seen two managers come and go since then but are slowly starting to turn things around under the watchful eye of Jose Mourinho.
They played their first game in the Champions League since December 2015 when they took on Swiss champions FC Basel at Old Trafford on Tuesday. The Swiss champions came into the match with 8 consecutive losses in European games and suffered their 9th loss as Man United was clearly the more dominant side throughout the game.
Man United Have Comfortable Outing
The Red Devils began their Champions League campaign with a 3-0 victory as Marouane Fellaini, Marcus Rashford and Romelu Lukaku scored. The first to score was Fellaini who came on as a substitute and put in one of his best performances for the Red Devils. Fellaini scored in the 35th minute after Ashley Young sent in a perfect cross for Fellani to put in a superb header.
Lukaku scored his first Champions League goal in the 53rd minute to give Man United a 2-0 lead and substitute Rashford scored a little while later to seal a comprehensive 3-0 victory. FC Basel looked pretty tense during the first half of the game and allowed Man United to dominate. They struggled to create any openings but did not throw in the towel and kept fighting till the end.
Mourinho Not Thrilled With PlayStation Football
Jose Mourinho was happy with the victory but said Man United could have scored more goals had they stopped playing around with unnecessary tricks and flicks. He accused them of easing up on the pressure by resorting to ‘PlayStation Football”. One might think that is a bit harsh in light of a 3-0 victory but Mourinho realizes that Man United has a long way to go to challenge the likes of FC Barcelona and Real Madrid. Barcelona beat Juventus 3-0 yesterday as Lionel Messi scored twice for the Spanish Giants while elsewhere Paris Saint-Germain defeated Celtic 5-0.
Manchester United will also be concerned after their captain and star player Paul Pogba had to be substituted in the 18th minute due to an injury. He was seeing leaving the ground on crutches and might have suffered a hamstring injury although it is still not clear. Mourinho sees Pogba as one of the most crucial players for the Red Devils and will be eager to get him back on the field so Man United can continue its climb to the top!
