Real Madrid are one of the biggest powerhouses in football as they have stable filled with the top players in the world. They have performed incredibly well under the leadership of coach Zinedine Zidane during the last 18 months and expectations are very high amongst Real Madrid fans.
Real Madrid Suffer Consecutive Losses
Real Madrid suffered a shock defeat to Girona in the La Liga over the weekend but shrugged off the defeat as a one-off. They knew that had to play well on Wednesday, November 1 as they were taking on a good team in Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley. The last time Real Madrid and Tottenham played each other was in October at the Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid and Tottenham surprised Real Madrid with a 1-1 draw in the Champions League.
Madrid knew from their recent experience against Tottenham that they would have to play well if they were going to defeat the English club at Wembley. They did exactly the opposition and put in a performance that was well below par and suffered an embarrassing 3-1 defeat. This was the first loss that Real Madrid has suffered during the group stage of the Champions League to an English team and it was also a long time since Real Madrid suffered back-to-back defeats.
Tottenham Overpowers Real Madrid At Wembley
Tottenham came into the match with a lot of confidence knowing that just a few weeks back they had held Madrid to a draw. This time around they wanted to do better and came out very aggressive in the first half and their aggression paid results as they went 2-0 after Dele Alli scored in the 27th and 56th minute. Real Madrid were stunned and did not know how to come back as Tottenham defended well but at the same time continued to attack and keep the pressure on Madrid.
Christian Eriksen would give Tottenham a 3-0 lead after scoring in the 65th minute and it was a foregone conclusion by then that Tottenham would walk away as the winner. One of the reasons for this is because they dominated Real Madrid in all departments and played exceptionally well as a team. Cristiano Ronaldo would score in the 80th minute to give Madrid a consolatory goal and save Madrid from a 3-0 scoreline.
Zinedine Zidane Under Pressure
Zinedine Zidane is used to seeing Real Madrid winning and knows that his bosses will not be pleased with the back-to-back defeats. Florentino Pérez, the president of Real Madrid has made it a habit to spend enormous sums of money to hire the best players in the world and at the same time show now patience when they don’t perform. Zidane knows that he cannot live on his team’s past accomplishments and will be looking to turn things around quickly.
Cristiano Ronaldo played down Real Madrid’s poor performances against Girona and Tottenham saying that the team had hit a rough patch but that they would bounce back and get back to their winning ways.
