Real Madrid’s Cristiano Ronaldo And Zinedine Zidane Win At Best FIFA Football Awards 2017
The FIFA Football Awards 2017 took place in London on Monday night and the event was attended by all of the top football players in the world including legendary football managers Kenny Dalglish and Sir Alex Ferguson. There were a number of awards given away during the ceremony which included FIFA Player Of The Year, FIFA Coach of The Year and FIFA World XI.
The biggest surprise would probably be that not one of English players featured in the FIFA World XI nor were any players from the English Premier League (EPL) included in the World XI. One can argue that this is because players from the EPL or from the England squad did not do enough to warrant a place in the World XI or look at it from a different perspective and say that football players from outside the United Kingdom did a lot more to find themselves being a part of the FIFA World XI.
FIFA World XI
The FIFA World XI has no surprises when it comes to its three strikers as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi and Neymar Jr were selected. The defence was made up of Marcelo and Sergio Ramos who play for Real Madrid along with Leonardo Bonucci who plays for AC Milan and Dani Alves who plays for PSG. The three mid-fielders shortlisted were Barcelona’s Andres Iniesta, Toni Kroos and Luka Modric who play for Real Madrid. The experienced Gianluigi Buffon was selected as the goalkeeper.
Real Madrid Sweep Show
Real Madrid was the team that had the most number of players that featured in the FIFA World XI. Their star striker Cristiano Ronaldo was awarded the Best FIFA Men’s Player of the Year while Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane received the Best FIFA Men’s Coach of the Year.
Zidane, the former French striker has done exceptionally well for Read Madrid since taking over as head coach. He has helped Los Blancos win their second consecutive Champions League titles after they defeated Juventus in May. Zidane also helped Madrid win their first La Liga title after a five year gap. Zidane had no doubt the best group of football talent available in Real Madrid but credit must also be given to his leadership skills as he is able to work with and manage multiple personalities and their egos.
Olivier Giroud who plays for Arsenal was awarded the FIFA Puskas Award for his spectacular goal of the year against Crystal Palace in January 2017. There were 10 nominees for this award and included goalkeeper Oscarine Masuluke from South Africa and Deyna Castellanos from Venezuela. Giroud said that he was honoured to be recognized amongst the greats in the game for his scorpion-kick goal.
Some of the other awards presented on the night include The Best FIFA Women’s Player of the Year to Lieke Martens; the Best FIFA Women’s Coach of the Year to Sarina Wiegman; the FIFA Fair Play Award to Francis Kone and the FIFA Fan Award to the Celtic fans.
