George St. Pierre And Michael Bisping Call on UFC President Dana White To Book Title Fight
UFC Middleweight Champion Michael Bisping was scheduled to fight the former UFC Welterweight champion George St. Pierre who decided to come out of retirement after a 3 year hiatus. The UFC started promoting the fight but suddenly decided to cancel it when St. Pierre announced that he would only be able to fight after October.
Dana White Not Happy With St. Pierre
UFC President Dana White wasn’t happy with the announcement as it meant the Middleweight division would have been held up for close to a year. As a result, the fight was called-off and Dana White said that after Bisping recovers from his injury he will fight the winner of the Yoel Romero vs. Robert Whittaker fight which takes place on 08 July in Las Vegas, Nevada for an interim belt.
White also went on to say that when St. Pierre is ready to return to the Octagon he will get a crack at the UFC Welterweight champion – whoever that may be. The current champion Tyron Woodley is set to defend his belt at UFC 214 against number one contender Damian Maia and the winner is set to face St. Pierre.
St. Pierre Asks White To Book Fight Against Bisping
However Bisping seems keen on facing St. Pierre as it is a big money fight for both fighters. Bisping called on St. Pierre to get on the phone and speak to Dana White and tell him that he wanted to fight for the Middleweight championship. It looks like St. Pierre has followed Bisping’s advice as he recent sent out a tweet which said “Michael, you should man up and fight me 11/4 in NY. I’m coming out of retirement to retire you. Dana [White], please make it happen.”
Considering the fact that the UFC has gone back and forth on the Bisping vs. St. Pierre fight, there is still a possibility that Dana White might change his mind and book the fight, especially because this time around St. Pierre has fixed a timeline. That being said, St. Pierre can fight only in November and that is a risky proposition for the UFC because if either Bisping or St. Pierre gets injured, then the fight will once again be postponed.
White would have most likely booked the fight if George St. Pierre who is Canadian, was ready to fight in September as UFC 215 takes place in Canada and it would have been great for the fans. The UFC President will most likely provide more clarity on the fight once UFC 213 is over and the interim champion emerges.
