Dana White Confirms UFC 215 Main Event & Co-Main Event For Edmonton, Canada
UFC 215 is scheduled to take place at the Rogers Place in Edmonton, Alberta on September 9. During the past few weeks, the UFC has announced a number of exciting fights for the UFC 215 card but had not confirmed the Main Event or the co-Main Event.
UFC President Dana White has finally confirmed that the Main Event will feature flyweight champion Demetrius Johnson take on the number 3 ranked Ray Borg and the co-Main event will feature women’s featherweight champion Amanda Nunes taking on the number one ranked opponent in Valentina Shevchenko.
Johnson vs. Borg
UFC flyweight champion Demetrius Johnson is looking to create a record and surpass Anderson Silva for successfully defending his title on eleven consecutive occasions. Johnson has dominated his flyweight division and there are many who believe that is the best pound-for-pound MMA fighter in the world and a win over Borg would only enhance that reputation.
UFC President Dana White is not impressed with Johnson because he refused to fight former UFC Bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw who was willing to drop weight and come down to 125 to challenge Johnson for the title. This was a match that UFC fans would have loved to have witnessed as it would have easily been one of the toughest tests for Johnson.
However Johnson was adamant that he wanted to fight only Borg and in the end Dana White yielded to his demands but made it very clear that he wasn’t impressed with Johnson as the great pound-for-pound fighter should not be turning down fights.
Nunes vs. Shevchenko
The fight between Amanda Nunes vs. Valentina Shevchenko was fixed as the Main Event at UFC 213 but had to be cancelled less than 24 hours before the fight as Nunes wasn’t willing to fight. White had said that Nunes received medical clearance but backed out because she wasn’t feeling well which really upset Shevchenko.
Since then Nunes has gone on social media to claim that she was suffering from sinusitis and did not want to risk her health by taking a punch to the head. White promised that he would not let Amanda Nunes be a part of another Main Event and true to his word, he has scheduled the fight as the co-main event.
Some of the other exciting fights on the UFC 215 card include former heavyweight champion Junior Dos Santos taking on the exciting Francis Ngannou and Jeremy Stephens taking on Gilbert Melendez.
