Roger Federer Loses Rogers Cup Final To 20 Year Old German Alexander Zverev
Roger Federer turned 36 in the middle of the Rogers Cup in Montreal and everyone expected the second seed to walk away with the Championship as his birthday present. Federer has had a phenomenal 2017 winning the Australia Open and Wimbledon and had a 16 match winning stream going for him.
The field was also open at the Rogers Cup as Andy Murray and Novak Djokovic had dropped out due to injury and Rafael Nadal had lost before the quarter-finals. Federer looked in good form coming into the final and the only one standing in his way was the 22 year old German poker pro Alexander Zverev.
Zverev Takes 68 Minutes To Finish Federer
The German poker pro had played Federer on June 25, 2017 and had lost on home soil in Halle 6-1, 6-3. He has also been in fine form in 2017, recently winning a tournament at Washington DC. The German had a powerful first serve and made it count in the finals, coming out in aggressive fashion to overpower the Swiss great.
Zverev said he knew from his previous match against Federer that if he allows Federer to be aggressive with his forehand and backhand, it was going to be a tough match for him. He decided to be the aggressor sending down 6 aces and get more than 80 percent of his first serve in to win in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. The two players have won 5 titles this season and will head into the U.S Open as strong contenders.
Federer was frustrated at the way he played as it took Zverev just 68 minutes to finish the match. Roger stated during the press match interview that Zverev took him game up two levels and winning the Rogers Cup was a wonderful achievement for the young player.
Elina Svitolina Wins Rogers Cup – Toronto
Elina Svitolina took on Caroline Wozniacki in Toronto, Canada to decide who will be crowned the Rogers Cup champion in the women’s division. Svitolina has been in good form this season winning 5 titles already this year. The number 5 seed had no problem in dispatching the number 6 seed Wozniacki and did so in straight sets, winning 6-4, 6-0. It was a one sided match, much to the disappointment of the fans who wanted to set a closely contested final. The 22 year old Svitolina will now moved up to number 4 in the world rankings with her Rogers Cup win.
