The U.S Open is the final grand slam of the year and also the highest paid grand slam tournament with each of the winners set to receive $3.7 million in prize money. American Sloane Stephens won the women’s singles and veteran Rafael Nadal won the men’s singles.
The U.S Open women’s final was interesting as none of the big names managed to make it to the final but what made it interesting was it was the first time in a long time that an All American women’s final took place at Flushing Meadows.
Stephens Delighted With Her $3.7 Million Cheque
Sloane Stephens was not seeded at the U.S Open and took on fellow American and 15th seed Madison Keys in the final. Stephens put aside her nerves and had a great start to the match and kept getting better with each game. She put in a dominant performance in what turned out to be a completely one sided match, winning 6-3, 6-0 to win her first U.S Open Championship which was also her first grand slam win.
The 24 year old tennis pro from Florida is reported to have made a little over $4.5 million in the last 7 years playing tennis and she was visibly excited to receive a cheque of $3.7 million and her expressions during the post match ceremony was priceless.
Rafael Nadal Wins Third U.S Open
The World Number one had a pretty easy path to the U.S Open finals as he never faced a top 20 player in his route to the final. The last time that this happened was during Pete Sampras’s run at Wimbledon 2000. The 31 year old Spaniard took advantage of his good fortune and clinched his third U.S Open Championship with a straight set victory over South African Kevin Anderson winning 6-3, 6-3, 6-4
Former U.S Open Champions Novak Djokovic, Andy Murray and Stan Wawrinka pulled out of the 2017 U.S Open due to injury and Nadal’s biggest threat was Roger Federer. However he did not have to encounter Federer who was eliminated in the quarter-finals by J del Potro. Had Federer made it to the finals and defeated Nadal, he would have succeeded in removing Nadal from the world number 1 ranking.
Federer has 19 grand slam titles and is number one on the list of most grand slam titles with Nadal in second place with 16. Nadal said he does not really keep track of such things but given the fact that he is 31 and Federer is 36, Nadal has a good chance to break that record for the most number of grand slam wins.
