Venus Williams is having a wonderful 2017 making it to two grand slam finals and reaching her first U.S Open semi-final since 2010. The 37 year old veteran put up an impressive display in the quarter-finals taking out Petra Kvitova 6-3 3-6 7-6 to make it an all American semi-final as she is scheduled to play the unseeded Sloane Stephens. This is the first time since 2002 that an all American semi-final is taking place in the women’s division.
Venus Williams Shines At 37
Williams won the U.S Open Championships in 2000 and 2001 but since then has not had a lot of success at Flushing Meadows. Williams who is seeded 9th had a tough game against the 13th seed Kvitova and was down 3-1 in the third but used her experience to put pressure on Kvitova who was hoping to make it to her first U.S Open semi-final.
Venus Williams will now become the oldest woman to make an appearance in a grand slam semi-final. The previous record was held by Martina Navratilova who made it to the 1994 semi-final at Wimbledon. Williams had over 23,000 fans at the Arthur Ashe Stadium throw their support behind her and she used it as fuel to overpower her opponent. She will go into the semi-finals as the favorite and should she manage to make it to the U.S Open finals, she will create history by becoming the oldest women’s tennis player to win the U.S. Open Championship.
Kvitova will be disappointed that she could not make it to her first U.S Open semi-final but will also be happy at how she has performed. The Czech player suffered a knife attack back in December 2016 after an intruder entered her home and attacked her. She suffered a cut to her hand and admits that she has still not regained full strength in her hand which has hampered her play to a certain extent.
Federer & Nadal Reach Quarter-Finals
Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal continued their good form at flushing meadows and made it to the quarter-finals. Federer defeated P. Kohlschreiber in straight sets winning 6-4, 6-2, 7-5 while Nadal had it easy against A Dolgopolov winning 6-2, 6-4, 6-1. Federer will now play the 24th seed J. del Potro from Argentina in his quarter-final match while Nadal will take play the unseeded A Rublev in his quarter-final match.
